World’s First DNA based COVID Vaccine Got its Approval

Developed in India

News Inputs from Gurmehar

New Delhi, Aug 21: The first-ever DNA-based vaccine developed by scientists of Cadila Healthcare Ltd., in partnership with the Department of Biotechnology for the coronavirus – ZyCov-D, of Zydus Cadila – has been approved for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). It is the sixth vaccine approved in India.

ZyCoV-D is the world’s first plasmid (small rings of DNA) DNA vaccine. It uses a section of genetic material (DNA) from the virus that gives instructions as either DNA or RNA to make the specific spike protein that the immune system will recognise and respond against the virus.

The vaccine is to be administered in adults and children aged 12 years and above.
It is a needle-free and three-dose vaccine with 28 days between each shot. It will be administered with a disposable needle-free injector.
