Meet Giorgia Meloni: Italy’s new Prime Minister

Giorgia Meloni, a 45-year-old politician, has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Italy by the current President of Italy, Mr. Sergio Mattarella.

The new government is a coalition of two other parties namely Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini’s League.

The government that has been formed is Italy’s 68th government since 1946. Giorgia Meloni has replaced Mario Draghi, a former European Central Bank head. Mario Draghi has resigned due to government crisis including recession, rising energy bills, and to present a united front over the Ukraine war. 

Meloni has promised to overcome all these challenges. The swearing ceremony was held in Rome, Italy.

Her new cabinet consists of 24 members from the allied parties (Forza Italia and League) as well. 

She declared Giancarlo Giorgetti as the economy minister, Antonio Tajani as the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign minister.

Matteo Piantedosi is the Minister of Internal Affairs. Matteo Salvini has been announced as the Infrastructure Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Adolfo Urso as Industry minister, Guido Crosetto as Defense minister, and Carlo Nordio as Justice minister were also announced as part of the new cabinet.
