Today, January 4th, marked the inauguration of the Integrated terminal of the Maharaja Bir Bikram Singh Airport at Agartala, the capital of Tripura.
The integrated terminal building, images of which were shared by Shri Narendra Modi on his Twitter handle, showcases the unique culture of Tripura.
Speaking on the inauguration, Shri Narendra Modi spoke about the HIRA model of development for the North East – H – Highways, I – Internet, R – Roads, A – Airways.
This trip to Manipur and Tripura also marked the inauguration of other key projects in the region.
Who was Maharaja Bir Bikram Singh?
Maharaja Colonel Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarman Bahadur (b. 19th August 1908- ascended the throne in 1923- passed away on 17th May 1947) was the second last monarch of the Manikya dyansty of Tripura. He was succeeded by his son, Maharaja Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya, was the last ruling monarch before Tripura merged with the Union of India in 1949.
The Manikya dynasty traces its origin to Maharaja Maha Manikya (1400 AD) – and has ruled Tripura since then.
Maharaja Bir Bikram Singh constructed the first airport at Agartala. He was also responsible for land reform in Tripura and for reserving land areas for tribal communities.
He also started Tripura’s first university.
