How to make Pichkari Colours for Holi

Pichkari is an important part of Holi. How do we make coloured water for pichkari if we don’t want to use chemical colours at all?

It is as easy as 1-2-3!

To make wet colours for Holli, follow these simple ideas. It takes about 30 minutes to make 4-5 different colours for your pichkari.

Red/magenta

Peel and add beetroot to water and leave for about an hour. You will have lovely, semi-permanent, bright magenta colour water.

You can also make beautiful vermillion colouring by boiling the petals of Tesu or palash tree.

Golden/orange

This is a surprise trick. Get henna leaves and boil them in water. You will get lovely orange/golden coloured water which can be used directly in a pichkari. The colour will remain for 3-4 days.

Green

This is another secret trick. Boil spinach and leave. Spinach leaves colour when it is boiled and the water becomes green.

Yellow

We already know how to make yellow colour – turmeric. Just add turmeric to water and boil. The colour is permanent. 🙂

And here are some other fun ideas for Holi colours that we have tried at home:

Yellow – Equal parts Besan and Haldi. Make sure that the turmeric is authentic.

Brown – Equal parts multani mitti and cocoa powder. Completely edible and also works as a fantastic face mask after Holi is over. Add a little sandalwood powder and you have a perfect face pack!

Green – Henna powder

PS: We have tried all of these ideas. The turmeric is permanent colour. The others last a few days. 🙂
