Gujarat and Maharashtra marked their 63rd Statehood Day on 1st May 2023. In 1960, the state of Bombay was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat. This was the result of a campaign to create a separate state for Marathi speakers. In the 1950s, many states wanted to be formed along linguistic lines.
In Gujarat, several functions were organised in different parts of the state.
The Governor of Gujarat, Shri Acharya Devvrat, presided over a grand function at Jamnagar. A Special Parade and colourful cultural programmes were organised as part of the function.
In Maharashtra, the Governor, Shri Ramesh Bais, unfurled the National flag and inspected the parade in Mumbai. In his address to the gathering, he extended warm greetings to the people of Maharashtra. Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde was also present on the occasion.
The Bombay and National Stock Exchange both took the day off to mark Maharashtra’s Statehood Day.
