Conjunctivitis

India is in the grip of conjunctivitis – Conjunctiva (the transparent covering of the eye) + itis (infection)

What is conjunctivitis?

It’s an infection of the eye. Typical symptoms are redness in the eye, pain, sensitivity to light, and discomfort. People usually wear dark glasses during this time.

How does it spread?

It spreads through droplets. If an infected person sneezes, coughs, or talks too close.

The other way is through eye secretions. So, shared taps or towels can lead to an infection.

Precautions to take

All infections have an “incubation” period. After the virus or bacterium enters our body, it takes some time to infiltrate the target cells and then the symptoms appear. But during this time, the person can infect others.

Therefore, in a situation like this, where many people are getting infected, it is more prudent to follow general precautions around everyone, including family members.

Masks in public

One of the ways in which this infections spreads is through the droplets in case an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even talks very close to you. So, a mask is the natural first line of defence.

No dry eyes

The fluid in our eyes keeps them clean and also protects them from basic infections.

Many people in cities suffer from dry eyes as a matter of course.

If you have dry eyes, ensure that you keep them hydrated – either through a prescription, or through pure rose water (can be prepared at home).

Wash hands often

Washing hands with soap and water is one of the best defences against infection.

No sharing towels

Do not share towels. Also, rotate hand towels and face towels often. Wash them in hot water and line dry in the sun if possible.

Line dry means to hang them up on a clothesline to dry naturally.

Treatment

Treatment is through eye drops. Cold packs also help a lot.

An episode of conjunctivitis lasts from ten days to two weeks.
