Zimbabwe’s general elections were held on 23rd and 24th August. The results have been announced.
Who participated?
• Emmerson Mnangagwa – ZANU–PF – incumbent president of Zimbabwe since 2017.
• Nelson Chamisa – Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
• Elisabeth Valerio – United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA).
• Joseph Makamba Busha – FreeZim Congress (FZC)
• Tapiwa Trust Chikohora – Zimbabwe Coalition for Peace and Development Party (ZCPD).
• Blessing Kasiyamhuru – Zimbabwe Partnership for Prosperity (ZIPP).
• Lovemore Madhuku – National Constitutional Assembly (NCA).
• Harry Peter Wilson – Democratic Opposition Party (DOP).
• Henry Gwinyai Muzorewa – United African National Council (UANC).
• Wilbert Mubaiwa – National People’s Congress (NPC)
Who won?
Emmerson Mnangnawa of ZANU PF has received the most votes in the second round and hence has secured the post of president for the second term. The main race was between Emmerson Mnangnawa of ZANU PF and CCC’s Nelson Chamisa.
How are elections conducted in Zimbabwe?
Like in Guatemala, Zimbabwe also follows the two round system. In this the people vote in two rounds. The candidates that get the most votes in the first round are selected for the second round. Again people vote for one of these two candidates. Whomever gets the most votes is the new leader
