Security detail is the protective team assigned to protect VVIPs (Very very important person) or VIPs (Very important person). It is provided as per the level of the threat to an individual. These threats can come from terrorists, militant groups, or criminals. It is the nature of the threat, individual’s position, and power that determines the level of security cover to be provided. Let’s first understand the different levels of security cover.
Security arrangement to the President, Vice President, and the Prime Minister of India are made as per the guidelines laid out in the ‘Blue Book’ issued by the Home Ministry.
- President’s Bodyguard (PBG) – This is the security detail provided to the President of India.The PBG are the senior-most regimen of the Indian Army.
- Special Protective Group (SPG) Security – Prime Minister, former PM and their immediate families are covered by this security detail. It is a highly classified detail and information of its strength is not made public. The members of the SPG details comprise of National Security Guard (NSG), Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and local police.
Protective details for everyone else is made by the measures mentioned in the ‘Yellow Book’ after threat assessment by security agencies.
- Z+Security– It is the highest category security in India. It’s team comprise of 55 personnel (10Black Cat Commandos of the NSG + Police personnel). It also includes an armed escort and a bulletproof car. Only 17 individuals are protected by the shield of Z+ security, these include Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi, Rajnath Singh, and more.
- Z Security – It’s team comprise of 22 personnel (4-5 NSG + Police personnel). Supreme Court Judges, Baba Ramdev, and few Bollywood actors, etc. are covered by this security detail
- Y Security–It is a security detail of 11 personnel (1-2 commandos +Police Personnel)
- X Security– 2 armed police personnel provide protection to individuals of this threat level.
