What is a geostationary satellite?

A geostationary satellite is a satellite that remains above a specific place on earth. For example, if a satellite is launched to remain above Delhi, it will orbit the Earth such that it is always directly above Delhi. Hence the name geo (related to earth) – stationary (not moving).
