What are wetlands?

A wetland is an area in which water covers the land wholly or partially.

They are home to unique ecosystems and are protected under a special convention – The Ramsar Convention, which was signed in Iran in 1971.

Wetlands can be of many types.

They can be areas where there is water because of tides. (coastal/tidal wetlands)

They may also appear in the floodplains of rivers and basins of dry regions.
