On February 2nd, 1971, the historic Convention of Wetlands of International Importance was adopted at Ramsar, Iran.
To commemorate (remember with respect), the World Wetlands Day is observed on 2nd February every year.
The theme for this year’s celebration is: Wetlands Action for People and Nature.
On World Wetlands Day, a new Ramsar site was announced – the Berg River Estuary in South Africa.
Ramsar Sites by Region
India now has 49 Ramsar sites. In Asia, China has the highest number of Ramsar sites (64), followed by Japan (53), and then India (49). With 25 sites, Iran comes next.
Globally, UK has the highest number of Ramsar sites for a single country (175).
