Wall Climbing Robot Developed by College of Engineering, Trivandrum
A final year engineering project in 2014 of a wireless wall climbing robot by students got its patent (the right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention). This robot can climb up vertical surfaces, ceilings, and roofs using duct fan mechanism. The machine can replace the manual labour jobs like cleaning and crack inspection of concrete structures.
It can inspect the surface of a dam for cracks and other damages. The robot is a four-wheel vehicle, which can move on the floor as well as on the wall. It gives faster movement and a better load- bearing mechanism than the already existing ones.
The movement of the robot and the working of the payload (the weight the robot can lift) can be monitored using a personal computer or by recording and analyzing the data recorded later. A working prototype (a sample of a new product) is available now and they are looking for production commercialisation possibilities.
