Cyclone Jawad, which originated in the Bay of Bengal, has been nearing the coast of Puri in Odisha since 4th December, 2021.
Though it was supposed to make a landfall on the coast of Puri on Sunday noon, its impact has weakened into a deep depression. Many districts of Odisha like Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur received very heavy rainfall taking Odisha’s average rainfall to 11.8 mm.
The remnants of the cyclone then gradually shifted to West Bengal resulting to heavy rainfall in Kolkata, South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur among other southern districts of the state. Cyclonic storms also affected some parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Precautionary evacuation efforts have already been made by the three states. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), states of Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya will also receive cyclone-borne rainfall with wind speed not crossing 45-65 kilometres per hour (kmph).
