Union Environment Minister launches the Urban Forest program

India has been able to preserve 8% of world’s biodiversity

New Delhi, Jun 06: On the Occasion of World Environment Day, the Union Environment minister Prakash Javadekar launched a new initiative called
Nagar Van, meaning Urban forests, in 200 corporation cities of India.

During the virtual celebration of World Environment Day 2020, themed as ‘Nature and Biodiversity’ Mr. Javadekar said that every Indian should
contribute to nature by planting at least one tree.

The motto behind this initiative is to increase the forest area in the cities which have sparse (few) green areas. The government is seeking active participation from its citizens for this cause and would like to reward
those who put their best efforts into this.
