If you see the graduation certificate of a parent or elder at home, right on top, is the name of the university. Only universities can give degrees.
So, can anyone open a university and start offering degrees to students? No. A university has to be approved by a body called University Grants Commission (UGC). A university can give degrees only after approval by the UGC.
Today, UGC declared 24 universities as fake. This means that the students studying in these universities will not get degrees that are accepted in India, or elsewhere.
Why are universities declared as fake?
It can happen because of one or more of the following reasons:
An organisation uses the word University without applying to UGC for recognition.
A university does not maintain the educational standard expected.
A university does wrong things or breaks some rules.
