Delhi, Jun 5: June 3rd is celebrated as World Bicycle Day. To most Indians, the word for cycles is Atlas. Since 1951, when the first factory was started by Shri Jankidas Kapoor in Sonipat, Atlas came a long way. It was the working person’s bicycle. If you ask your parents or grandparents, they will be able to tell you more about the legacy of this brand.
One of these cycles, owned by Amartya Sen, is on the wall of the Nobel Museum in Stockholm.
On June 3rd, Atlas cycles closed production at its last remaining factory – at Sahibabad just outside Delhi. The company has said that it has run out of money to operate the factory. The company’s CEO Shri N P Singh Rana has said that the company hopes to raise money and restart operations.
