The March of the Monsoon, 2025

This year, the monsoon winds reached Kerala significantly ahead of schedule. As regular readers know, Monsoon reaches Kerala between 29th May and 1st June. But this year, 24th May was the date of onset. After a very heavy march through peninsular India in May, however, the Rain Gods appear to be slowing their chariot.

Take a look at the monthly monsoon report for May 2025.

As we can see, most areas, esp in peninsular India, report excess of over 60%.

But in the first week of June, that map looks like this:

If we notice some other statistics also, like this cumulative performance table on the IMD website, we observe that the excess rainfall has reduced, both in intensity and distribution.

Intensity: How much extra rainfall is there.

Distribution: In how many districts is the excess rainfall being observed.
