The 17th G20 Summit was held in Bali, Indonesia, on November 15 – 16, 2022.
The Summit was attended by all the Heads of State, except Russia, which was represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
India assumed its role as the Leader of the G20 for the coming year. While the Indonesian President, Mr. Joko Widodo, handed over the leadership to the Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, at the closing ceremony of the Summit, India officially gets this role only on December 1, 2022.
Even though the leadership is rotated once a year, this is the first time that India has emerged as the leader of the G20. India has launched a logo and theme for this year.
The First G20 Heads of State Summit was hosted by the US in 2008.
What happens at the Summit?
There is an official agenda. This agenda covers finance, global peace, and environmental measures that the member states commit to taking in the coming year.
Agenda is the list of things that a group of people decide to complete. For example, when you meet your friends, you may decide to finalise the birthday gift for someone, complete your homework, and maybe play 6 overs of cricket. This is the agenda for the day.
In addition to the formal agenda, Heads of State also meet each other one-on-one. Finance Ministers and other special interest groups also meet each other.
At the end of the Summit, a statement is released. This statement outlines the work that will be done by the organisation in the coming year, and what the member states jointly believe in.
