Singapore has recently conducted presidential elections. The winning candidate was former prime minister Tharman Shanmugarathnam. This is the first presidential election in over 12 years.
Over 2.7 million voters took part in this year’s election. The election was held from 8 am to 8 pm local time.
Tharman Shanmugarathnam got 70.4 % of the votes. The other participating candidates were Ng Kok Song and Tan Kin Lian. Ng Kok Song won 15.7% and Tan Kin Lian won 13.88% of the votes. Tharman Shanmugarathnam thanked his supporters saying that he was truly humbled by the amount of endorsement he got from Singaporeans.
The new president, Mr. Tharman Shanmugarathnam, is 66 years old and began his journey of politics in the year 2001. He went on to become the deputy prime minister of Singapore from 2011 to 2019. Madam Halimah Yacob, Current President of Singapore, will complete her six-year term on 13 September 2023.
