Tamil Nadu discontinues the use of Rupee symbol in budget communication

In the recent past, Shri M K Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has made statements about the imposition of Hindi on Dravidian states of South India.

The logo of the state budget 2025-26 omits the Rupee logo. Instead, it uses a Tamil symbol for rupee. The budget document also uses the Tamil symbol ‘ரூ’ instead of the rupee symbol ‘₹’.

What does the logo of the Indian Rupee mean?

The logo merges the Devanagari letter र with a stylized Roman R. The two parallel lines at the top, separated by white space, symbolize the Indian tricolour and resemble an equality sign.

The symbol was adopted in 2010. It was selected as a result of a national contest to design the logo of the Indian currency. The contest was won by Dharmalingam Udaya Kumar, who was born in Chennai and is an IIT Mumbai post-graduate.

What is the debate on two-language and three-language

Most states of India teach children three languages in primary, middle, and high school. These three languages are: English, Hindi, and the state language.

National Education Policy advocates this three-language formula, and that all primary education should be in the native language of the child (the state language).

Tamil Nadu follows a two-language formula. Children are taught only two languages – English and Tamil.

Shri Stalin has opposed the implementation of the three-language formula. His belief is that this amounts to the imposition of Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states.
