Supreme court puts on hold 3 farm laws

Forms a committee for talks with the farmers

The Supreme Court put a stay on the implementation of the three farm laws until further notice. It set up a committee which comprises of two experts and two farmer leaders, to hear both the parties, and understand the reality of the situation.

In eight rounds of talks with farmers’ unions over the past month, the government had firmly ruled out withdrawing the laws, but had offered to make amendments. The Supreme court stepped in after a court case was filed by the farmers union in December. The names suggested by the Supreme Court include agricultural economist Ashok Gulati, Anil Ghanwat (Shetkari Sanghatana), Bhupinder Singh Mann (former Rajya Sabha) and Pramod Joshi (International Food Policy Research Institute).

The farmers, however, rejected the idea of the Supreme court, and refused to go before the committee. The centre has filed an affadit in the Supreme court that A- Farm laws are the result of 2 decades of deliberation. B- Farmer support the laws in other parts of the country.
