Lisbon, June 10: India’s 23-year-old Neeraj Chopra, the current Asian and Commonwealth champion, won the gold medal in the javelin event with a throw of 83.18 meters at the Lisbon Athletic Meet in Portugal on June 10th. After starting with an 80.71 m throw, he scored 78.50 m in the fourth throw and produced his best of 83.18 in his final and sixth throw. His 2nd , 3rd and 5th throws were fouls. With a throw of 88.07 m, he broke his national record in the Indian Grand Prix 3 in March in Patiala. In January 2020 Chopra had qualified for the Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 87.86 m, surpassing the requirement of 85 m.
