Some GIS Portals that all of us should know about

Here are some amazing GIS (Geospatial Information System) portals made for Indians. All of them take data from ISRO satellites (Indian satellites, no foreign dependence)

I. Visualisation of Earth Observation Data (VEDAS)

This is a phenomenal website. You can access it here.

All the applications possible from the VEDAS website

Free Thematic Atlas for download

The following atlases are available on the site for free download:

Some Applications

While there are several applications, we found these very interesting:

Forest Cover and Land Use

There were several options to layer the map as we wanted. It was possible to see administrative units like towns and cities (no surprises, when we layered towns and cities we found that all the low vegetation areas are towns and cities of human habitation)

The flexibility to do data visualising and layering is much better on this portal. It can be accessed here.

Solar Insolation and Renewable Energy

This visualisation allows us to see the potential for renewable energy based on the insolation (amount of sunlight available) in that area. Wind speed and direction are also indicated. You can see trends for the month or year.

This is the map at the moment. This visualisation can be accessed here.

II. Bharat Maps

https://bharatmaps.gov.in/ Home page

Bharat Maps – https://bharatmaps.gov.in/ is a multi layer GIS solution that allows Indians to get a lot of information about India in a visual way (using maps).

Some of the interesting applications that we found on the website are:

Postal GIS

School GIS

We have covered the School GIS earlier in The Children’s Post. It can be accessed here.
