Delhi, Jun 16: Singapore is a southeast Asian country located to the south of Malaysia. Chinese, Indian, and Malay make up the vast majority of the population in the country with 40% being immigrants. During this decade, Singaporean population grew by just 1.1% per year, which is the lowest since its independence in 1965.
Why did this happen?
Some of the reasons are:
A. The median age (age which divides the population into two equal parts) increased from 37.4 to 41.5 (which means that 50% population of Singapore is aged more than 41.5).
B. The birth rate is also decreasing – from 8.8 births per 1000 people in 2019 to 8.5 births per 1000 people in 2021.
C. In 2020, because of the lockdown, Singapore saw very little immigration (people coming into the country) and job losses led to some emigration (people leaving the country).
