Shelly’s Eagle owl photographed after 150 years

With news inputs by Aryaa Sinha

Ghana, Oct 26: A giant owl which had gone missing in the African rainforest for almost 150 years has been located by experts in Ghana’s Atewa forest in Africa. The picture of the bird was taken by Dr Robert Williams, an ecologist from Somerset, and Dr Joseph Tobias from the Department of Life Science at the Imperial College, London.

Shelley’s Eagle, which is known for its distinct black eyes, yellow bill, huge size, and eagle like appearance, is a native of Central and West Africa. It was first described in 1872, when Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a bird curator, obtained a specimen from a hunter. Since then, there has not been any confirmed sighting of this bird, and hence it was officially classified at risk of extinction. This sighting has raised the spirits of environmentalists to conserve the Ghana forests.
