Patna, May 25: The first shipment of litchi with GI certification was exported to UK. It was sourced from farmers in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. Shahi Litchi was exported by Cira Enterprises, India and was imported by the H&J Veg, London. GI or Geographical Indication is used for products originating from a definite geographical area and helps farmers to get premium price of the product.
Shahi Litchi is the 4th product to get GI certification from Bihar. In 2018, 3 other products, Jardalu Mango, Katarni Rice and Magahi Pan got the certification. The life span of litchi is very short, so efforts are being made to explore more opportunities to export it to other countries as well. India is the 2nd largest producer of litchi, 1st is China. In India, Bihar tops the production of litchi.
