Here are some key appointments in September so far.
Attorney General of India
Senior advocate, R. Venkataramani, will take over as the Attorney General of India from October 1, 2022.
He has served as a lawyer for more than 40 years.
The current Attorney General, KK Venugopal, retires on September 30 after an extension. He is 91 years old.
Mr. Venkataramani will serve for 3 years.
This appointment is made by the President of India.
Chairperson of NALSA
The second most senior judge of the Supreme Court, Justice DY Chandrachud, has been appointed by the President of India as the Chairperson of NALSA – National Legal Services Authority.
NALSA was formed in 1995 to provide free legal aid to the underprivileged and to organise Lok Adalats fr speedy justice. The Chief Justice of India is the patron of NALSA while the second senior most judge is usually appointed the chairperson.
Chief of Defence Staff
Chief of Defence Staff is the leader of all the 3 major forces of India – the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.
Indian Army chief General Bipin Kumar Rawat was appointed the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on December 30, 2019. This post fell vacant in December 2021.
The next Chief of Defence Staff was announced today.
Lt Gen Anil Chauhan (retd), a former eastern Army commander and director general of military operations will now be the Chief of Defence Staff, India.
The age limit for the CDS is 65 years, with no fixed tenure. Lt. Gen Chauhan is 61 years old, which gives him a stable tenure.
