Scientists successfully use drones for farming in Varanasi

A group of scientists from the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) demonstrated technological advancement in farming by successfully planting seeds using drones in a farm in Varanasi. It took the scientists just 15 minutes to sow 27,000 sq. ft.
The drones were used to plant seeds in the fields of the rice-wheat cropping system where tractors cannot be used due to wet soil. A rice-wheat cropping system is a cyclic system where the soil is converted from aerobic (containing oxygen) to anaerobic (devoid of oxygen) to aerobic again by increasing the quantity of water in the soil. Rice requires stagnant water in the field which makes the soil anaerobic. Wheat requires soil balanced with moisture, air, and heat. The presence of air makes the soil aerobic. The use of technology will reduce the cost of farming, solve other barriers, and increase the productivity and efficiency of the farmers.
