To close on 20th January 2021
The Sabarimala temple will open on December 30th at 5pm for ‘Makaravilakku’, the annual festival at the hill shrine of Sabarimala. Makaravilakku is one of the most important annual festivals of Kerala and lasts for 41 days.
The devotees at the temple worship the Lord Ayyapan(God of growth) at the festival and clad them with ornaments also known as Thiruvabharanam. It is believed that Lord Ayyappa is the son of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, who got this title due to the golden bell in his neck. The other rituals performed at the Sabarimala temple include:
- Prasadasudhi – Distribution of prasad
- Deeparadhana – lighting of diyas or camphor
This year owing to the pandemic conditions, only 5000 pilgrims are allowed inside the temple per day.
Devotees can seek darshan at the Sabarimala temple from the morning of the December 31st , 2020, until January 19 ,2021.
