The French Open 2022 was held in Paris, France, at State Roland Garros Court as every year. It is played on a clay court.
Spaniard Rafael Nadal beat Norwegian tennis player, Casper Ruud with an injury in his foot. C. Ruud was defeated in straight sets : 6-3, 6-3, and 6-0. This was Nadal’s 14th win.
Iga Swiatek of Poland clinched the trophy in the Women’s Singles category by defeating Cori Gauff. Swiatek has won the French Open for the 2nd time. The scores were: 6-1 and 6-3.
J. Rojer and M. Areval-Gonzalez won the Men’s Doubles title. They defeated I. Dodig and A. Krajicek. It is the first time that they have won the French Open.
The scores were : 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), and 3-6. (The scores in the bracket denote the points scored in the tie breaker. The duo that wins the tie breaker gets 1 point, which is added to their points tally for that particular set and they win the set.).
The Women’s Doubles title was won by K. Mladenovic and C. Garcia. They defeated J. Pegula and C. Gauff. This was their 4th win. The scores were : 6-2, 3-6, and 2-6.
W. Koolhof and E. Shibahara won the Mixed Doubles against U. Eikeri and J. Vliegen. 6-5(5-7) and 2-6 were the scores.
Facts about the Roland Garros/French Open
The French Open is named after a French pilot, Roland Garros. It started in 1891, only for French people, or those associated with a French Club. In 1925, it became an open tournament, allowing international players to participate as well. The player to have won the French Open maximum times is Rafael Nadal, who has picked up the trophy 14 times. Chris Evert is the only female to have won the Open 7 times.
