News inputs from Alka Singh

Madurai, July 15: The seventh phase of excavation is presently going on in Keezhadi (also called Keeladi) in Tamil Nadu. Recently, archaeologists unearthed the first terracotta design ring well with a band of carved designs on the rim. Three layers of the ring well were uncovered. The height of the first ring is 44 cm, and has a diameter of 77 cm. The total height of the ring well is 79 cm. The second ring had a different style of band around the rim. The bands had depressions which look like thumbprints which were equally divided into small squares. This terracotta ring well was found at a depth of 126 cm in one of the eight pits dug recently. Each ring is made with a locking system and sit closely one on top of the other, which prevent the sand from entering it.
