On 13th March, 1922, Prince Edward VIII, the Prince of Wales, inaugurated the Royal Indian Military College. This was a premier college to train soldiers all over the Indian subcontinent (at that time, India included the present day Myanmar (then known as Burma) too.
Today, this college, now known as the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), celebrated its centennial (100th) Founders’ Day.
To mark the occasion, a Guard of Honour was presented to the Governor of Uttarakhand, Lt. Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd). He also presided over the event and released a commemorative postage stamp.
RIMC has been an Academy only for male students so far. In the July 2022 batch, for the first time, 5 female students will join the program.
RIMC is a school for students between the ages of 11.5 and 13 years of age. (equivalent to Grade 8 of the schooling system). Students study here in a residential program.
Selection is through a test that includes a written exam, a viva voce, and a medial fitness test.
Students join twice a year – in January and in July.
RIMC is generally considered a stepping stone to a career in the armed forces. Many students join the National Defence Academy (NDA) from here.
