With the merger of 23 villages with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune has now become the largest city in Maharashtra, in terms of the geographical area under its civic body. The total area under the Pune Municipal Corporation is 485 sq. km.
Earlier with a total of 440 sq. km the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had the largest area under its civic body.
The Maharashtra Government notified that the boundary of PMC was altered by the state under the powers conferred under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act.
