Population of Penguins and Cormorants increase in Galapagos island

Galapagos island served as a natural laboratory for Charles Darwin for his theory of the evolution of species. It got this name because of the giant tortoises named Galapagos living here. The population of Galapagos penguins, one of the smallest species of penguins in the world measuring 35 cm in height has increased from 1,451 in 2019 to 1,940 in September 2020.

Meanwhile, cormorants of the islands have lost their ability to fly and have developed diving skills. These unique flightless cormorants have also increased in number from 1,914 to 2,220 over the same period. Officials said that the drop in tourism and the presence of La Nina climatic phenomenon (cooling of surface ocean water) helped in the increase of their population.
