Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 450-km Kochi-Mangaluru natural gas pipeline built at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore by GAIL (India) Ltd.via video conferencing, today. This is a part of the efforts that the government is making to ensure India becomes a natural gas-based economy, and towards the creation of ‘One Nation One Grid’. “India’s first natural gas inter-state pipeline was commissioned in 1987”, Modi said, adding, “Since then, till 2014, in a gap of 27 years, 15,000 km of natural gas pipeline was built.” This gas pipeline would carry natural gas from the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Kochi (Kerala) to Mangaluru (Karnataka). It has the capacity to transport 12 million metric standard cubic meters of gas per day. The aim of this pipeline is to supply environment friendly and pocket friendly fuel to households and commercial sectors. The prime minister also said that emphasis is being laid on manufacturing biofuels. He wants us to not depend on fuel imports, but become self-sufficient as a nation.
