Pink Line of Delhi Metro goes Driverless

News by Swasti Sharma

The Delhi Metro is a fully automated driverless network of about 97 kilometres and is the 4th largest metro in the world. It is the largest and busiest metro rail network of India and the second oldest, after the Kolkata Metro.

It is the only Driverless Train Operation (DTO) network in India. The DTO facility was launched on the Magenta Line in December 2020 with which the Delhi Metro had entered the elite league of the world’s 7% Metros in the world which operate fully automated metro networks.

The Driverless Train Operation will bring more flexibility in train operations, reduce human intervention and human errors. It will also help in improving the availability of coaches for service. The Driverless Trains will eliminate the manual process of checking done before induction, subsequently reducing the burden on train operators.

The parking in depots will also be done automatically.

On November 25th, 2021, a 59 kilometer stretch of the Delhi Metro that lies on the Pink Line, became fully automated and will not need a driver any more. With this addition, the total driverless network of the Delhi Metro grew to 97 kilometers.

The inauguration was done via videoconferencing.
