When you buy something, there is a small printed notice on the packaging that tells you where the product was made. That is not just the seller being nice and sharing information. This is required under Indian law. The sellers have to indicate where the product was made, its measurements, and maximum retail price.
When you buy something from Flipkart or Amazon, however, you don’t always know the country of origin because it is not shown. All eCommerce companies had till September 30th to comply with this requirement.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has given a notice to Amazon and Flipkart this week, asking why action should not be taken against them.
Why is this important?
- In India, there is a growing number of people who would like to buy products made in India. The Govt. of India has also been communicating the importance of buying Indian products to give a boost to local manufacturing.
2. India and China have been having skirmishes on the Ladakh border. This has led to a strong anti-China sentiment among Indians. Since majority of the products are made in China, it is important for people to know if they are buying a product made there.
3. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has also been asking for the place of origin declaration. eCommerce companies take a lot of business away from real shops and traders.
