Awarded to World Food Program
The World Food Program (WFP), a United Nations agency that battles hunger and food insecurity around the world, has won the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize. The World Food Program is the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security. Food security is a measure of the availability of food and individuals’ ability to access it. In 2019, the WFP provided assistance to close to 100 million people in 88 countries who were suffering from food insecurity and hunger.
WFP was established in 1961 and launched its first programs in 1963. In 1965, the program was extended to a continuing basis. The WFP operations are funded by voluntary donations primarily from governments of the world, and also from corporations and private donors. The World Food Program is governed by the WFP Executive Board, which consists of 36 Member States and provides intergovernmental support, direction, and supervision of WFP’s activities.
