New Delhi, Aug 31: On Tuesday, for the first time in India nine new Supreme Court judges took oath in one go. They took oath in the presence of the Chief Justice of India, N. V. Ramana.
The Supreme Court of India was established on 28th January 1950, and is the supreme judicial (legal) body of India with CJI (Chief Justice of India) as head. It consists of maximum of 34 judges.
It was also the first time the Supreme Court allowed a live telecast of the ceremony. The name of the judges in order of seniority are: Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Vikram Nath, Sikkim High Court Chief Justice J K Maheshwari, Telangana High Court Chief Justice Hima Kohli, Karnataka High Court judge Justice B V Nagarathna, Justice C T Ravikumar of Kerala High Court, Justice M M Sundaresh of Madras High Court, Justice Bela Trivedi of Gujarat High Court, senior advocate P S Narasimha, and Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka.
With these 9 appointments, the strength of the Supreme Court judges would rise to 33 (including CJI) out of total sanctioned strength of 34.
