Nikon Small World and Small World in Motion

Since 1975, Nikon (a company that produces cameras, lenses, and several other related products), has been awarding photomicrography – a form of photography that combines the power of the microscope with the power of the photography lens.

In 2011, the Small World in Motion section was added to the contest – to award movies or digital time-lapse photography taken through the microscope.

The winners of both were announced recently.

The Small World in Motion prizes were announced in September while the Small World in Photography prizes were announced on October 11.

Small World Photography Awards 2022

The first prize went to Grigorii Timin, supervised by Dr. Michel Milinkovitch at the University of Geneva, for his image of an embryonic hand of a Madagascar giant day gecko.

20 prizes were announced in the still photography section and 15 Honourable Mentions were made.

57 Images of Distinction (IOD) also made the cut. The entire list can be seen here.

Small World in Motion Awards 2022

In the videos category, 5 videos were awarded, while 25 made the Honourable Mention.

How to participate in the competition?

If you are an aspiring photomicrographer, entries are open till April 2023. Anyone can participate.
