– In India, Kumar Mangalam Birla stepped down as non-executive chairperson for Vodafone – Idea
(called Vi) which is a telecom company in India. In the recent past, the company’s losses have
grown and it has found survival difficult. Vodafone UK had refused to put any more money into the
India operations. In June, Shri Birla had written to the government, offering to give up the Birla
group’s 27.66% ownership of the company in favour of a government entity. The government has
not, so far, taken up the offer. Vi employs roughly 9,500 people all over the country. On Thursday,
the CEO, Shri Ravinder Takkar sent an email to all employees assuring them that there is no
danger of the company shutting down.

– In the US, Uber posted an operational loss of $509m for the quarter April – May – June 2021. This
loss is before interest, taxes, and depreciation. This means that the final loss will be even more.

– In India, Cochin Shipyards Limited and Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND), shared a
moment of pride as INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier, left the port for sea
trials. Sea trial means testing the ship on the sea. This is the first set of sea trials for the ship.
There will be more before the ship is finally declared fit for use by the Indian Navy.
