Kansas, May 7: A team of researchers from the University of Kansas discovered a new frog species in the Philippines. The frog species found was the Mindoro fanged frog (Limnonectes beloncioi) on the island of Palawan. Fanged frogs are frogs with large teeth. Teeth are not very long or are absent in other frogs. These two species were almost indistinguishable. For over 100 years, they were considered to be part of the Acanthi fanged frog species (Limnonectes acanthi). However, the Mindoro fanged frog has different properties in its mating calls from the Acanthi fanged frog. Mating calls are calls used to attract or give signals to the other frogs of the same species. The scientists stated that these species looked identically similar but were genetically quite different.
