IT to make things easier for everyone
In this world of technology, when everything is on our devices, Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has also made some changes to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.
The use of IT services and electronic monitoring would result in better enforcement of traffic rules in the country. It would also make life easy for commuters as it’s cumbersome to carry so many papers everywhere.
A few changes to be applied from the 1st of October, 2020 are as follows:
Drivers can maintain their vehicular documents on Central government’s online portal like Digilocker or m-parivahan. Documents like Driving License, The vehicle’s registration certificate (RC), Insurance details, etc, can all be uploaded on these.
Provisions have been made for the procedure for production and obtaining certificates in physical as well as electronic form.
Vehicular documents that are validated electronically shall not be demanded in physical form anymore. So no more soft copies required at the time of checking by the authorities.
Details of driving licences disqualified or revoked by the licensing authority will be recorded. Further the driver’s behaviour would also be monitored and put in the records.
All e-challans issued would also be visible on the information technology portal.
If the documents are asked to be seen at any point of time, the date and time stamp of inspection and identity of the police officer in uniform or any other officer authorized by the State Government, shall be recorded on the Portal.
A handheld device could be used while driving, solely for route navigation purposes (GPS). But it should not distract the driver while driving.
