Delhi, Jun 9: Shri Anup Chandra Pandey, a 1984 batch retired IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, was today appointed as an Election Commissioner of India. The Election Commission of India is an independent body that is responsible for holding all elections in the country. It is headed by three Election Commissioners.
On April 13th this year, Shri Sushil Chandra, one of the Election Commissioners, took charge as the Chief Election Commissioner. With that appointment, the place of one Election Commissioner fell vacant. Shri Pandey will therefore join the top executive body along with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Shri Sushil Chandra, and Election Commissioner, Shri Rajiv Kumar. Generally, Election Commissioners are appointed for a tenure of 6 years but as the retiring age of Election Commissioner is 65 years and he is 62, he will hold this post for 3 years.
In the past, he has also served as a Chief Secretary to the Government of Uttar Pradesh, and as the Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh. He has also served in the central government as Joint Secretary.
