Delhi, May 3: Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana was appointed as the 48th Chief Justice of India. He assumed office on 24th April 2021. The Chief Justice of India is the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is the highest-ranking officer in the Indian judicial system.

Justice Ramana was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2000. He has been a Supreme Court judge since 2014.

India is a democratic country. It has its own Constitution. The power of the government is distributed among the legislative, executive, and the judiciary. The legislative makes laws and can change laws, the executive executes the laws and rules made by the legislative. The judiciary interprets the laws.

The outgoing Chief Justice recommends a successor. Usually, this is the most senior judge of the Supreme Court. The recommendation is then approved by the Prime Minister and the President.
