Myanmar Elections Results: Aung San Suu Kyi’s party wins
Delhi, Nov 18: Myanmar is an important neighbour of India. Till 1937, it was a part of India and was called Burma. It has had a military rule (rule by the army) since 1962. In 1989, it was renamed ‘Myanmar’.
Aung San Suu Kyi is a politician who wanted to end the military rule in Myanmar and bring back democracy. Her party won majority in the 1990 elections but the military leadership did not give up power. This started a second round of discussion with the military to bring back democracy.
In 2010, the first elections took place under the new agreement, but her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), did not fight the elections.
In 2015, Aung San Suu Kyi led her party to a resounding victory. In 2020, the party has further strengthened its position. In the Lower House, it now holds 258 out of 330 seats, and in the Upper House, 138 out of 168 seats. NLD has the majority it needs to form the government. Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi is considered the leader, even though she cannot be appointed as President because of the constitution of the country.
Some opposition parties have complained that the elections were not fair.
