Mount Merapi is located on Java – one of Indonesia’s most populated islands. This island also has the current Indonesian capital – Jakarta.
Indonesia is on the Pacific Ring of Fire . This makes it susceptible to earthquakes. (Susceptible to – open to something).
On Saturday, Mount Merapi turned into an active volcano and started spewing ash.
Residents have been advised to stay at least 7.5 kilometers away from the volcano. Tourism and mining activities around the area have been stopped for now.
The ash from the volcano has found its way to some nearby villages.
Merapi’s previous eruptions were in 2010 and 1994.
