On September 8, 2311 hours local time (11:11 pm), an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 hit Morocco. The epicenter was about 70 kms from the popular city of Marrakesh, towards the Atlas mountains.

The people most affected are in small villages. This is making rescue difficult.

Everyone steps in to help

Algeria, which had closed its borders two years ago, has offered to open its airspace. France has said that it is ready to help and is waiting to hear from Morocco on what is needed.

The President of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, has also pledged support. So has Israel.

Many civilians are providing supplies to those affected using their own money.

The Moroccan football team has started a blood donation campaign by donating blood themselves.

Christiano Ronaldo, a football player, who also owns a hotel in Marrakesh, has made his hotel a shelter for those affected.

People waiting to see if its safe to go home

Since there have been multiple aftershocks, people are not sure if their homes are safe enough to live in. An aftershock of magnitude 3.9 has just been reported by US Geological Survey, while writing this report.
