Monsoon landslides in Kashmir and Nagaland

Report by Shuchi Giridhar

With heavy rains and loose soil, many states of India are experiencing landfalls. Just a couple days ago Uttarakhand experience landside which caused the government to close off the Badrinath National Highway.

In Jammu and Kashmir, a large landslide occured on Monday. After weeks of rain the landslide closed off one lane of the Jammu Srinagar highway. The landslide occurred in the Kunfer area of Chanderkote. The 270 m Jammu Srinagar Highway is the only road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country. Though one lane was blocked the other was almost unaffected.

There has also recently been a landslide in Nagaland. It happened at a construction site in Rahul Nagar near the Eastern Express Highway in Chunnabhatti. The soil must have loosened due to construction and caused the landslide to happen. The incident was reported at 9:00 a.m. in the morning. According to speculations about 25 feet of debris has slid. No injuries have been reported yet.
