Naypyidaw (Myanmar), Feb 4: Myanmar has been under military rule for 49 years from 1962 to 2011. In the recent elections held in November 2020, the National League for Democracy (NLD) party under Aung San Suu Kyi had a landslide win. On Monday (Feb 1), hours before the parliament was meant to resume for the first time after elections, the military declared a one-year state of emergency.
The military staged a coup (removal and seizure of a government and its power) and detained Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint and took control of the country.
Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing seized the power on allegations that the election held three months ago was fraud. He said that the military will hold power for one year and after that, fresh elections will be held.
